The St. Petersburg surgeon’s medical bracelet was recognized as the best startup of the year
On November 29, 2023, the full-time semi-finals and finals of the fifth All-Russian HSE FEST University Technology Projects Festival were held, organized by the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg with the support of Rostelecom PJSC.
The HSE FEST 2023 winner was the Newman project, an innovative bracelet that prevents bleeding from the radial artery after heart surgery. The jury members appreciated the simplicity of the technology, the sophistication of the business model and the market potential of the project, as well as the personal involvement of the device’s creator, a practicing cardiac surgeon, in the project. Another important factor for the jury was the human-centricity of the development and the focus on an import-substituting solution. The cash prize was 250 thousand rubles.
“The first place prize will help us support marketing, because we are currently in an active sales phase. Just a month ago, we received a registration certificate. As for our plans, in addition to solving the issue of production in Russia, we want to scale to India and Brazil,” he said Dmitry Ognerubov, surgeon, author of the development and CEO of Newman Technologies.
“The Higher School of Economics, with such a project as HSE FEST, solves several tasks at once, aimed at one main mission – the creation of a platform where university initiatives can directly communicate with large industrial companies.
Firstly, the festival participants receive unique experience from mentors and experts on the successful launch of digital products to the market, consultations on all aspects of creating a startup, and discuss trends and current requests in the IT field with colleagues. All this in practice helps to strengthen their projects under the “supervision” of the best specialists in the industry. Secondly, the best projects “fall on the pencil” of Russia’s leading IT companies. This provides an opportunity, among other things, for the training and personal development of specialists for the industry. And, thirdly, the HSE startup festival is aimed at popularizing technological entrepreneurship within the walls of higher educational institutions,” she commented Ksenia Yarovenko, Deputy Director for Human Resources and Organizational Development at the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg.
The second place was taken by the project “MyMeet AI” – an AI assistant for video conferencing. The main function of the application is to transcribe online calls in the form of a report with brief contents, tasks and keywords.
The jury placed the NanoScience project in third place – a protective coating that increases the shelf life of vegetables and fruits. NanoSkin vegetable spray allows you to retain moisture in the product, keeping it fresh for longer.
